Wikimania is the official annual conference of the Wikimedia Foundation, an American non-profit and charitable organization headquartered in San Francisco<ref name="Hanson2016jt, Following, Texting, and Connecting|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=ePEZDAAAQBAJ&pg=PA375%7Cyear=2016%7Cpublisher=ABC-CLIO%7Cisbn=978-1-61069-768-2%7Cpage=375}}</ref> and known for participating in the Wikimedia movement. Non-governmental organization? How NED can be NGO, If it was founded by U.S.Congress and it's directly financed by Congress. It does not meet basic criteria for being NGO. The NED receives an annual appropriation from the U.S. budget (it is included in the chapter of the Department of State budget destined for the U.S. Agency for International Development-USAID) and is subject to congressional oversight even as a non-governmental organization."2008 Independent Auditors' Report" (PDF). Similarly the German Marshall fund is financed by government but sees themselves as an classifies as an NGO.
The concern about NGOs in the political layer is that they are not accountable to anyone but their funders. I find it not desirable that organisations work in the political space without being accountable to their funders, often just wealthy individuals who should seek a mandate for their activities. 2001:8003:A070:7F00:D5EA:6BEF:1FE3:E469 (talk) 04:02, 6 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
