Would you mind helping with an email I got from admin folks on Commons. I asked David Hepworth if he would supply an image for his bio, telling him he would have to release all rights etc, which he agreed to. Okay, Ceoil, there are two main points. Number one is Hepworth, as the subject, may not actually be allowed to release the image under a free license. This is because the owner of the copyright (i.e. the person who can actually release the image under a free license) would generally be the photographer, and not the subject. The second concern is that "you can do whatever you want with it" is not an explicit release under a compatible license. They prefer explicit statements such as "I release this under a CC-BY-SA 3.0 license" or "I release this image into the public domain"; such statements are considerably less ambiguous, and give an actual license (rather than "do as you please, but I still hold full copyright" which could be read from Hepworth's original statement. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 01:56, 23 June 2014 (UTC)

I've got a source that clarifies what Motoki saw in India. It looks like there are quite a few images with free licenses that could be used to illustrate it, but none of them look very good to me. You've got a better eye for photos, though, so maybe you could find something good in there? The Harishchandra ghat is apparently the place where they do these ceremonies, and is likely the place Motoki visited (though he doesn't get more specific than saying he was in Varanasi). I went and reverted your moving of Australian two-cent coin to Two-cent coin (Australian). It was a good argument that all two-cent pieces should be named similarly but I reckon that it's a better argument that all Australian coins should be named similarly. In other words, having Australian one-cent coin, Two-cent coin (Australian), Australian five-cent coin, Australian ten-cent coin, Australian twenty-cent coin, etc. is worse than having Two-cent coin (New Zealand), Australian two-cent coin, Two-cent piece (United States), etc. Of course, the best thing would be to standardise on a single style for everything (so go ahead and revert my revert, if you want, but please move the other Australian coin articles along with the 2c). It's probably something we should bring up for discussion on some centralised location. Perhaps WP:NUMISMATICS, as you suggest, might be a good place to start. Just browsing in the coins category turns up plenty of articles using some variation on one style or the other. It's going to be a bit of a job getting them all standardised whichever way we end up going. (There are other issues as well such as piece vs coin and spelt-out numbers vs numerals.) I don't know the sorry behind why the bible uses it as Hades---the normal word for Hell is jigoku. Christianity is not a Madhur religion here, and from what my wife was saying it doesn't sound like she was even aware of the biblical sense of the word. Having said that, I really have to emphasize that this stuff is not something I'm terribly knowledgeable about---my wife was picking on me for bringing it up because she knows I'm no fan of religious stuff---she was asking if I'd suddenly had a religious awakening. We have historically allowed nominators to withdraw nominations, for a variety of reasons (not to be patronizing; I know you know this). I fail to see why we should stop, especially when said nominations are obviously causing the nominators considerable distress. BTW, I bought a scanner (finally, although it's nothing special... a Canon LiDE 110), so I should be able to add some banknotes from what I have at home. Actually, that's the scanner I use: it's probably the best of the cheaper scanners; every other one I've tried has flaked out way too early. Yes I have limited source for churches, I'm not even an expert on these. What I know is that mosques are overrated in Indonesia, and church persecutions happened a lot. If you like mosques please check and or revise List of mosques in Indonesia :D. Joglo style are more vernacular, so older and much more historic in a way. Those mosques in Maluku are even older and harder to find info (as so Moluccan churches). Kudus' Hindu style are too Indian, and the usually modern domes are simply too Middle East. But I think that it might be the comment that is an insignificant work combined with C.O.M.C. comment that there is already an Utamaro in the Featured pictures that it made it unpopular. But this is a different composition, three women in a triangle by Utamaro. And if you look at the category Wikipedia:Featured pictures/Artwork/East Asian art, there is no such picture there, and actually Bijin-ga (worked a bit on that artice as well) is rather poorly represented among our Featured Pictures of East Asian art-> Wikipedia:Featured pictures/Artwork/East Asian art. I'm not sure what you're asking---is it if the Three Known Beauties (or whatever translation) is a well known Utamaro? I don't know how I'd rank the well-known-ness of individual Utamaros, but I'd at least say it's reprinted fairly frequently. For instance, I've got Ukiyo-e no Mikata from the library by my bed right now, and it reprints it as one of seven selections in the Utamaro section. I'm not particularly knowledgeable about daguerreotypes either but it's definitely got characteristics of both an engraving/drawing and photograph. The facial features are not particularly photographic looking, particularly the eyes and the hair and the way it is significantly sharper than other parts of the image, but the way the focus fades away on the right side of the frame suggests a photograph. My guess is that it was a daguerreotype that didn't really turn out as intended (perhaps the subject moved too much and became blurred) and was subsequently touched up to enhance the detail. Haha, there's a good reason why panoramas are never done with a dolly. The subject would need to be completely two dimensional. Actually, on a semi-related note, I've considered doing a high resolution panorama by moving the camera against the glass of the Rosetta Stone at the British Museum. I've never been able to do it properly because there are just so many tourists crawling all over it every time I visit. It does work in theory, and I've almost managed to do this with another similar stone at the British Museum, but not quite perfectly enough to publish it on Wikipedia. The problem starts to come into play when you reach the edge of the flat face at the top right corner of the Rosetta Stone where it falls away to the rear of the camera. You would need to make sure that there isn't more than one image covering this section or you would encounter parallax problems. So basically it would require quite a lot of measurement and consideration of focal lengths, distances to subject, etc etc to really pull it off professionally. I don't think I've ever seen a set fail for a single image, and I think (though I'm not sure) that only those particular images would fail if there was much opposition (rather than the whole set). For the purposes of credit, one image = one credit, not one set = one credit. For the purposes of the main page, how sets are handled varies widely.
Howcheng appears to have generally selected a representative image, or made a collage (see the Extermination of Evil set's main page appearance here for an example), whereas I've been either making collages, having images in a set run separately when each element is notable (like Adam's restorations of illustrations to the works of Tennyson) or using a more complicated system in which images are selected randomly every time the main page is purged (such as the recent Hawaii overprint noteshere). In other words, historically not all images in a set have made a main page appearance, but there's a movement towards allowing sets to show in whole. — Crisco 1492 (talk

We haven't generally had an issue with images of photographic equipment so far. Hey Crisco. I'm not here to argue over which version to use, but when expansion began.
DYKSG D8 says 7 days "means seven days old in article space". The simply way to determine whether its eligible is would it still be eligible if I had kept the text added on June 25 and expanded from there. Unless I'm mistaken it still would, since the expansion would've began on June 25 and ended on July 2 (7 days). I don't think I should be penalize for removing the initial text added, since it was done within the allotted 7 days, when anything can be added or removed as long as the end result is 5×. —Bloom6132 (talk

The article as you found it was 1418 characters. That your expansion begin with removal of content is not particularly pertinent, as poorly sourced or unsourced information is not automatically excluded from the character count (otherwise I could have nominated, say, Gita Gutawa after expanding the article). Yes, I found it that way, and it doesn't really matter. I'm not arguing over the fact that I removed content, and I don't care about whether it was unsourced. I agree with you, it should count – as part of the 5× expansion I finished. The original article was 598 characters; the IP expanded it to 1481 characters on June 25 and within 7 days I completed the expansion to over 5×. The IP started the expansion, I completed it – that's why I put it under the June 25 DYK date, not July 1. If you're insisting that I must use the 1481 character version, then I'll have to reluctantly give the IP credit as a co-expander so that it'll "count" as starting on June 25, even though I feel they don't really deserve it. —Bloom6132 (talk) 11:09, 3 July 2014 (UTC)
Wait, let me make sure I've got this... you are stating that this is a 5x expansion based on a date a week before you yourself started expanding, as by using the addition as the point of reference for the addition (even though none of the IP's additions were kept) this still meets the age criteria? If that's correct, it's a very non-linear approach to the DYK ruleset, and also very allowable. As for whether the IP should get credit, I agree with you: no. If you read the fine print on some of the posters and cards, they say that the item is the property of X Films and must be returned after the local theater is done showing the film. Protection?
Hi Crisco - I have to ask about the protection on the article about the Isla Vista killings. By my count there have only been four edits to the page by four different editors in 24 hours. Though the edits have opposed each other, four days of full protection seems like pretty severe overkill - especially given that no single editor has made a change back or forth more than once. I honestly hadn't even noticed the previous edits in making my initial change - I was just going through a category removing inapropriately catted articles. Judging by how the ink has run out of the border, I suspect it's not in the original photograph. I'd remove it. As if I haven't been enough of a burden on you with the Yelp page, I thought since I knew you have been online recently I would ask if you had time to take a look at this IP edit on another page where I have a COI. The user added a Controversies section for a recent event, citing a blog post, a forum post and some kind of self-published Linux enthusiast site. There are some decent, though fairly minor sources for a company this large that could be used to add a sentence under Recent History[9][10], but I think the edit is a pretty overt recentism, undue, V, NPOV, etc. etc. problem. My experience with DYK was probably not the best(4/8 passed). Recently I created an article, Dogs in the United States, it will be good to nominate? It exceeds the limit, I still got 2-3 days, it can be largely expanded. But honestly since I am the creator and you have to be involved anyway, I can hope that things will go smoothly, but not sure what you think. Also BlueMoonset, what you think?
User:SchroCat asks me offline if I know of any public domain images of Alastair Sim, on whom we are both separately working. If I have correctly absorbed the WP rules from you and User:Loeba (heroic in your efforts on my behalf chez Richardson and Gielgud), if one can dig up an image that was published in the United States between 1923 and 1977 and without a copyright notice, it is in the public domain in the US. I think all these can be shown to fit that description, as the uploaders have obligingly reproduced both the front and the back of these press photographs: here (1), here (2), here (3), here (4), here (5) and here (6). I don't understand. The almond blossom picture is not the same as it was before. I can notice that. It is darker somehow and Coat said something that s/he changed that. No, s/he said that, but it didn't happened. The image is different still, the FILE is not what it was - if you look and compare with the ones below, look down on the files. It is not the one you cropped - it is not the same file NOW that is dispayed - that was displayed on the nomination.
It is NOT = 3,139 × 2,480 (4.82 MB)/ Trim black border /Crisco 1492 that is shown when file used but = /3,532 × 2,786 (2.54 MB)/ Coat of Many Colours/High resolution version from Vincent van Gogh Museum/ Correcting error in crop. You're correct, PD-US files that are not free in their source country can be kept on Wikipedia (as I noted at the deletion thread, though under a different file): "While Wikipedia prefers content that is free anywhere in the world, it accepts content that is free in the United States even if it may be under copyright in some other countries." Re the photo of Gregorson Campbell - the book only indicates it is one of the few available and shows him in "middle life" and the illustration is just by E. Griset - I don't even know if this is the same guy as it isn't listed under his works there?
Similar style, so you could probably argue that it's the same Griset (in which case it would be PD-100 and thus safe for Commons). For the Campbell image, I'd recommend {{

I'd crop at least to the white border, but that's me. About 600px to the left of his left ear (viewer's left) is what looks suspiciously like dust or dirt from the lens. In the same general area is what I'd consider a bit of dirt or something from the lens as well. (And yes, those white spots look to not be part of the image). Yeah, that's one of the reasons I don't tend to bother with Commons' FPC. Two nominations every ten days or so is a pain, and that's presuming enough people vote on it in the first place, as it's very heavily dominated by photographers, who often won't vote on historical media. Thanks for responding quickly. In your response, you said that country names in football are treated as adjectives. Normally, and correct me if I'm wrong, it would technically be "Germany's defeating Argentina" (had there not been the rule for football that you mentioned, since "Germany" would otherwise be treated as a noun). In the realm of football, would the phrase actually be "Germany defeating," "Germany" the adjective, and also, what then would "defeating" be? A noun? If it's a verb, that would mean that "Germany" would have to be an adverb and not an adjective. "Argentina" at the end is surely a noun, but I'm interested in the rest. Thanks,
The way I see it, if we used "Team Germany" and "Team Argentina" (instead of the current Germany and Argentina), the possible discrepancy disappears. I definitely misspoke when saying it was an adjective, though (sorry!). Thinking it over a bit more, if I had to divide the sentence (and I'm out of practice) it would be "The FIFA World Cup (subject) concludes (predicate; end of independent clause) with [Team] Germany (subject) defeating (predicate) [Team] Argentina (object) in the final (modifier)."
The whole construct is meant to avoid the team = singular vs team = plural issue (i.e. in one variety of English, it's "Germany defeats", while in the other it's "Germany defeat"). — Crisco 1492 (talk) 16:31, 15 July 2014 (UTC)

File:William Crooks at station.jpg Though the LOC didn't identify it, this is William Crooks (locomotive). By looking at the other Commons photos, you can see this is the train. If you root for the underdog, you've gotta like this little train built in 1861. The president of the Great Northern Railway (US) saved it from the scrap heap by appointing it his personal train. The train was brought out by GN for world's fairs and various rail fairs. Nothing against but whenever you leave any messages concerning any discussion, try to be more specific to the subject you are talking about. Which '6 people' you are talking about? Interestingly you never get blocked for removing a spam link, but for repeated violation of basic guidelines. So far the only legible issue was about the datings, I did on 160 pages and about 145 were correct as they were related with American datings. I had rectified the rest and I had agreed on first sight that I won't be doing it on any non-american english pages. The issue probably resolves unless I am repeating the same thing. Pemilih yang cerdas
Bang Woodrich, saya mau bertanya, mengapa jika memberikan suara pada FAC (APU), maka pengguna-pengguna di sini akan memberikan kajian yang mendalam pada artikel yang kita usulkan, sedangkan di WBI hampir semua pengusulan APU zaman sekarang malah tiada komentar sama sekali? Saya melihat ada artikel yang sebenarnya tidak memenuhi syarat sebagai AP, namun bisa menjadi AP. Ini disebabkan karena saat ini, di WBI, pengguna-pengguna yang memberikan suara pada APU (maaf) tidak memperhatikan apakah artikel yang diusulkan memenuhi syarat sebagai AP sehingga artikel yang sebenarnya tidak dapat menjadi AP dapat menjadi AP karena para pemilih lebih banyak memberikan suara setuju daripada suara tidak setuju. Khawatirnya, jika keadaan ini tidak dibiarkan, maka beberapa tahun ke depan AP-AP di WBI tidak lagi berkualitas seperti dahulu.
